When I was pregnant, I had some friends and family ask me what we planned to do with our 4 cats. I know there are myths out there about cats stealing the baby’s breath or smothering them to death, but I never imagined I knew anyone who believed them. Having always lived around cats, I never considered if there might be an issue when Ethan arrived. Would they get jealous and strike him? Or steal his bottle after another cat distracted me? I was more worried our dog would be upset.
I was out of work for over half my pregnancy and spent my days at home sleeping, trying to find another job. This allowed our tiny Yorkshire Terrier, Mambo, to enjoy his time on my ever growing belly. How was HE going to compete for my lap when I had Ethan there? Mambo does insist on being near me, touching me, licking me, regardless of who/what I am holding. However, he has never attempted to lay on Ethan’s face or push him out of the way. Out of curiousity, I decided to look up any pervasive myths about how dogs and babies interact. Apparently dogs and babies should not get too close to each other. I need to make a video of Ethan crawling after Mambo to get his toy and how Mambo plays keep away with him.
As far as the cats are concerned….
I think they love him, too.
